Lead in Water Testing Identifies the Source a Blood Test Cannot
A blood lead test measures what has reached a child from every source combined, which is the figure a clinician acts upon. It does not identify which source is responsible.
Olympian Water Testing provides professional lead in water testing for families with young children throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Why Source Identification Matters
Lead reaches children from paint, dust, soil, certain consumer products and drinking water. Of those, drinking water is the source that can be characterized precisely and addressed directly.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that drinking water can represent twenty percent or more of total lead exposure, and between forty and sixty percent for an infant fed mostly on formula prepared with tap water.
What the CDC Reference Value Indicates
The blood lead reference value of 3.5 micrograms per decilitre is set at the ninety seventh and a half percentile for children aged one to five, identifying children carrying more lead than most children carry.
CDC estimates approximately half a million children in the United States are at or above that value, and notes that lead poisoning often occurs without obvious symptoms.
How the Sampling Event Is Conducted
The site attendance is carried out by our highly trained and skilled laboratory technicians, who perform the site visit and sampling event, with lead collected as an ordered sequence of draws along the supply path.
A stagnation period is requested from the client where the parameter requires it, and outlet screens are left undisturbed so particulate lead is captured.
Understanding Our Reporting
Our reporting identifies each draw, the method applied, the reporting limit and the measured concentration, set against the applicable published reference.
Since 1991 Olympian Water Testing has conducted this work under NELAP accredited laboratory analysis.
